ABSTRACT

This study seeks to evaluate the causes of examination malpractice among senior secondary school students taking Egor Local Government Area of Edo State as a case study. Educational development sustains the growth of the nation. Examination malpractice threatens the growth of Education and competency thereby putting the country in jeopardy. As a result, with this ever-expanding industry, we need adequate measures to help curb this growing menace. This study explains the causes of examination malpractice in senior secondary schools why teachers’ attitude and competence is a necessity for all teachers in the educational system in Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted for the study. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised. The sample size of ten senior secondary schools was used for the study. Data was collected with the aid of well-structured and valid questionnaires; the data collected were analyzed using simple percentages. The findings showed that teachers’ knowledge and method of teaching plays a big role in examination malpractice. Student’s unseriousness with their studies is also a major problem leading to violation of examination norms. Societal influence and too much emphasis on paper qualification also lure students to engage in examination malpractice. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made; it was recommended that there is a need for new measurement and evaluation criteria that will reduce the burden on examination as the only yardstick for academic progress, ranking and ability. Candidates found guilty of the crime of examination malpractice should be punished severely to serve as deteriorate to others.
