ABSTRACT
This study assessed attrition rate of students to the study of history in senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, (LGA) Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. A review of related literature was carried out in other for better understanding of concepts related to this study as explained by various authors. The review include the concept of History, history as a secondary school subject, importance and role of history in the secondary schools curriculum, problems and challenges of teaching and learning of history in secondary schools. Furthermore, students’ attitude and perception towards history as a subject, students enrolment/attrition to the study of history and factors responsible for attrition of students to the study of history were reviewed. The population of the study comprised of senior secondary schools students in the thirteen (13) public schools in Egor LGA. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample of one hundred and twenty (120) was selected as respondents using simple random sampling. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire which contained items related to the research objectives. Data collected was analyzed, results presented and discussed.
