ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to investigate the analysis of students attitude towards the study of Economics in Oredo local government Area of Edo state. It seeks to know the factors affecting the positive or negative attitude of students studying Economics in public secondary schools. The design of the study is descriptive while the population comprised students in the education zone. The sample size for the study was 50 respondents while a researchers’ self developed questionnaire formed the instrument for data collection. A 20 item questionnaire was used to get information from the respondents who were selected from five public secondary schools using simple random sample techniques. Based on the data collected and analyzed, the following results were obtained. It was discovered that students' negative attitude towards learning is been caused by so many factors such as the bulkiness of the subject, teachers' attitude, school environment, school libraries, and so on. It was also revealed that employment of unqualified teachers has a very great effect on the negative attitude of the students. Inadequate Teaching and instructional materials were also noted as a major factor affecting the students’ attitude. The study found out that students' attitude can be positively developed through effective teaching methods, selection of suitable instructional materials, provision of functional libraries equipped with current reading materials so as to arouse the interest of students in the subject. The study concludes that Economics has a big role to play in motivating the students. They should be given the privilege to attend seminars, workshops and conferences so that they can be conversant with the recent developments in the teaching world to help enhance the positive attitude of students' in learning.
