ABSTRACT
Slang is vocabulary (words, phrases, and linguistic usage) of an informal register, common in spoken conversation but avoided in formal writing. It is also sometimes refers to the language generally exclusive to the members of particular in- groups in order to establish group identity, exclude outsiders, or both. This research is conducted to discuss the meaning, types, and reasons for using slang used in the Nollywood movie SELINA TESTED. The main objective of the study is to know types of slang, and the reasons for using slang in this movie. This study is a qualitative research, The researcher used the criteria of identifying slang from Jonathan Lighter and Bethany K. Dumas and the theory from J.L Austin (1961) about speech act theory was used as a guideline to carry out the work .The data collated form watching all 26 episodes of the online YouTube series show Selina Tested were 67 , The slangs are categorized based on the semantic domains of descriptive slangs, complementary slangs , derogatory slangs, imperative slangs and declarative slangs. Meanwhile the next findings is on analysis of the collated Data using the J.L Austin Speech Act theory.
