ABSTRACT

The combination of verbs in succession without a conjunction or connector separating them is an area in syntax known as serial verb constructions. Interestingly, this subject is most commonly examined in the filed of linguistics, where the syntax and phonetics of West African dialects are studied. This is because there is the proliferation of serial verb constructions across these West African dialects, and the quantity of serial verb constructions in Nigerian pidgin pale in comparison. This work examines these serial verb constructions in Nigerian pidgin . It reveals the characteristics, functionalities and structure of serial verb constructions in Nigerian pidgin. The goal is to  solve the problem of the dearth of academic research in this area. It further opens up more grounds for scholars in the field of linguistic studies to pay more attention to this subject of serial verb constructions, which should not be the exclusive reserve of West African dialectical studies alone.

The method of data collection involved primary sources, the primary data involved one hour 30 minutes recorded conversation on a diversity of issues discussed by Nigerian pidgin speakers.

This work also claims that serial verb constructions in Nigerian Pidgin is a surface phenomenon which is achieved through the economy of derivations of Chomsky(1995).
