ABSTRACT

This work discuss the post lexical sense relation in Yoruba. The aim of the study is to use relevant data to explore the semantic, syntactic as well as the sociolinguistic implications of post lexical sense relations in Yoruba Language structure. This work advances the study of descriptive linguistic since it is based on meaning in Yoruba.

The theoretical frame work adopted for this study is the basic linguistic theory (Dixon 1997). The data relied on for study comprised primary and secondary data .The primary data consisted of oral interview with competent native speakers and users of Yoruba language. The bulk of the secondary data are documented works ranging from dictionaries, online and hard print journals, text books and unpublished projects and thesis, and subjected to systematic criticism and selective analysis.

The study found out that the knowledge of Yoruba language does not stop at merely mastering the meaning of individual words. Words in Yoruba combine in a variety of ways to yield different forms of meanings. Thus words in Yoruba exhibit meaning relations in the sentence. The study also found out that context does not always clearly indicate the intended meaning of an expression. The study also found out that the syntax and semantics of Yoruba are inter-related. In some way the case of the post lexical sense relations of ambiguity and paraphrase in Yoruba, the syntactic order plays a major role in the omission of some words. The creation of sentences can result in ambiguity and the reconstruction of words in sentences can result in ambiguity also the reconstruction of the words of a sentence can result in paraphrases.

The work concludes that sentence meaning in Yoruba relates to the context and situation of words and sentences usages.
