ABSTRACT

This analysis delves into the impact of police brutality on lives and properties in Nigeria, with a specific focus on the #EndSARS movement. Sparked by widespread reports of abuse by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the #EndSARS protests in 2020 marked a significant turning point in Nigerian civil activism. This study examines the historical context of police brutality in Nigeria, the catalyst role played by the #EndSARS movement, and its aftermath on individuals and communities. By analyzing data from media reports, eyewitness accounts, and official records, this research highlights the profound effects of police actions on public trust, safety, and property. Furthermore, it explores the socio-economic ramifications and the government's response to the protests. The aim of this research is to carry out an analysis of police brutality in Nigeria with particular reference to the End Sars effects. The doctrinal method of research is adopted in this study. This research recommends that; there is an urgent need to improve the training of the police terms of human rights observance. In conclusion, police should be reoriented about respecting of human right and also stop collecting bribes when discharging their duties. The dilemma of unlawful arrest and detention is through legislation which fills the lacuna of laws governing detention. Other suggestions include; proper training of the police force, deployment of advanced forensic techniques for investigations, encouragement of professionalism within its rank and file effective punishment of erring officers as deterrence to others. 

The findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive police reform and greater accountability mechanisms to prevent future abuses and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
