ABSTRACT

This study delves into the persistent issue of gas flaring within the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry, tracing its origins as an unavoidable byproduct of crude oil extraction. Despite numerous attempts to address this practice, gas flaring continues to wreak havoc on the environment and human health, particularly in the Niger Delta region, where most oil extraction activities occur. The research aims to comprehensively analyze the motives behind gas flaring, its detrimental effects on both the environment and human life, and the existing regulatory frameworks aimed at curbing this practice. While gas flaring has been a longstanding practice in the industry, there is a growing realization of the economic potential of utilizing natural gas for power generation and clean fuel purposes. The Nigerian government has enacted various legislations over the years to combat gas flaring, with the latest commitment in August 2021 to eliminate it entirely by 2030. However, these efforts have fallen short of their intended outcomes, despite the readily available technology for gas monetization initiatives. The Petroleum Industry Act of 2021, which specifically addresses gas flaring activities, holds promise with its stringent regulations.
