AN ANALYSIS OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study carried out an analysis of examination malpractice in senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The population consisted of all the secondary school teachers in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The proportionate stratified sampling technique was the method adopted. The sample consisted of one hundred secondary school teachers. Ten representative samples were selected from ten secondary schools. The instrument used for the study was the questionnaire which was tested for it's reliability and the correlation determined was 0.91% which is reliable. The data collected was analyzed using percentage and frequency table. The result of the study revealed that laziness, lack of preparation, poor preparation, poor quality teaching, frequent absence from school, rarely studying one's books and copying the lifestyle of unserious friends is a cause of examination malpractice. Consequently, it was also revealed that low academic achievement, academic shame, the look down on certificates obtained from Nigeria by foreign bodies and the presence of half-baked graduates are results of examination malpractice. In this study, the researcher made some suggestions and recommendations that would help to reduce examination malpractice amongst secondary school students and teachers alike.
