ABSTRACT

Septicemia is said to occur when bacteria gets into the bloodstream. Herbal medications are used extensively throughout the world and may provide certain health benefits including treatment of microbial infections. This research is aimed at investigating the polyherbal aqueous extract of Annona muricata (soursop), Andrographis paniculata (king of bitters) and Zingiber officinale (ginger) against bacterial-induced septicemia in rats. Microbial strains of Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli were administered and the rats were treated at graded doses (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) of the polyherbal aqueous extract to evaluate the hematological and liver histopathological study. The results of the extract at graded doses when compared with the untreated control revealed a significant increase in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) at 50 and 100 mg/kg, a slight increase in the haemoglobin and the red blood cell (RBC) count equally increased slightly at 50 and 100 mg/kg of the extract. Granulocytes and monocytes differentials showed a significant increase at 25 and 50 mg/kg. The platelet count (PLT) displayed a significant increase at the 25 mg/kg with a slight increase at 100 mg/kg. The histological study showed a normal architechtural framework of the liver with no damaging effect when compared with the control. In conclusion, the extract findings validated the folklore report, thereby requiring further study of other biological activities.
