AIR QUALITY AND NOISE LEVEL ASSESSMENT OF OTOFURE DUMP SITE AND ENVIRONS IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study involves the air quality and noise level assessment of Otofure dump site and environs in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria to verify if the population within the environment are being exposed to unhealthy level of air pollution. In this practical work, 150 sample locations were used to get the pollutants concentration level of the dumpsite environment, 50 of which were locations at Federal highway roads, and 50 were locations at Residential neighborhoods and 50 were at Market Square. An air monitoring device was used to get the pollutants concentration in the air and a noise level meter was used to get the sound level parameters of these sample locations. However, From the results of this study, it was observed that the locations within the Otofure Dumpsite Environment and its immediate surroundings is greater than the FEPA, WHO, and OSHA permissible limits by having high levels of concentration of PM2.5 (>25 µm/m3 , 0.25ppm) PM10 (>50 µm/m3 , 0.25ppm) and also noise level exceeding 50dB at some of those locations. It was then concluded that the areas within the Otofure dumpsite environment are not safe to being exposed to and the workers should always put on protective gears when they are in the working environment and it is recommended these Otufure dumpsite environment should be build in an isolated area so that it cannot cause infections to the population around it i.e those residing in the environment, those shops in the environment and also vehicles, bus, trucks, bikes passing along the road.
