ABSTRACT
This project contended that pre-colonial economics of Urhonigbe was traditionally based. The economy attained a high level of sophistication and possessed all the attributes of a well-organized economy in terms of production, processing, distribution and exchange. Even though the economy of pre-colonial Urhonigbe was sustained by subsistence agriculture, and industry, it was however able to meet the basic needs of the people. The economy of Urhonigbe was based mainly on agriculture and carried out extensively through communal labour. Though majority of the people farmed around their homes, it was usual in all the villages to own wide expanse of land at the outskirt or periphery of the village on which farming was carried out. Using Edoguns and Okaligban as an example, majority of the people possessed farming grounds (farmland) on the Ika road on the way to Urhonigbe. As successful agriculturists; they produced sufficient quantity of food crops which served both subsistence and commercial purposes.
