ABSTRACT
Afrobeat is a multifaced style of music ranging from African to Western influences. With Burna Boy as the case study of this research, the researcher examined lyrical content, language and instrumentation in his songs. The purpose of this research was to determine the parallels between Afrobeat in its early stages of development and Afrobeat now, the characteristics of current Afrobeat sound included in Burna Boy's songs, and the impact of Afrobeat in the positive portrayal of African cultures. Findings suggested that Afrobeat can be classified as African. To achieve the aim, forms of qualitative research approach were employed to gather necessary information for the study. This research employed an approach that incorporates observation and secondary sources. This method included consultation of relevant material from journals, papers, documents, and other internet resources. It also included a thorough assessment of relevant songs in order to form subjective assumptions. The project closes with answers that prove that music plays a big role in reflecting cultural background through the existing relationship between Afrobeat and the African culture. Burna Boy's use of music to comment on serious social and political issues in his society, re-awakening the consciousness of his people to the beauty of African cultural values, and promoting the importance of unity and solidarity among the African race, both within the continental shores and beyond, has been investigated and discussed as part of this study. The study thus recommended that music in Africa, asides its purpose of entertainment, should also serve as a means for upholding African heritage and ensuring that the revival and preservation of its vast cultures is sustained.
