ABSTRACT

The descriptive and usage of adverbs is very essential and prominent in the sentential constructions of language as it aids the understanding and creativity of the information being passed across by language users. This study is a descriptive analysis of adverbial in Edo its aims at classifying and discussing the distinctiveness of adverbs, the various types and their derivations as found in the Edo language. The data for the work was collected through elicitation from native speakers as well as published works. The basic linguistic theory of descriptive linguistics was the theoretical framework adopted for the study. The adverbs collected were grouped in their different derivative forms and functions. The study found that adverbs in the language are distinct in their distribution and usage. It was observed that the adverbs modify the meaning of the verb, the verb phrase or the whole clause in which it occurs in the language. It was also observed that some adverbs were derived from verbs through the process of reduplication (productive derivational reduplication) while some were also derived from reduplication but preserved the semantic properties of the base from (unproductive reduplication).
