ADEQUACY OF TEACHING MANPOWER IN PUBLIC JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study examined the Adequacy of Teaching Manpower in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The researcher employed the descriptive research design in carrying out this study. The population of this study comprised of 30 public junior secondary schools with their principals in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample. 20% of the schools making a total of six (6) schools. Two research instruments were used for the collection of data; The Student Enrollment Checklist (SEC) and The Teaching Staff Checklist (TSC). The validity of the instrument was ascertained by the researcher’s supervisor and two other lecturers in The Department of Educational Management, in Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The data was analyzed using frequency count and percentage along with the set standard of the National Policy of Education (NPE). The findings revealed that the teaching manpower in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State was Inadequate. The major qualification of teachers in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State was B.Sc, B.A.Ed, B.Ed, which indicates that the teachers were qualified. The Teacher/Student ratio in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State does not correlate with the set standard of National Policy of Education (NPE). Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that Government should ensure more teachers are recruited and deployed to the Ovia North East Local Government Area in Edo state. Preferably, teachers should be recruited from the local government. Government should maintain the level of qualification of teachers in Ovia North East Local Government Area, when recruiting teachers. The Ministry of Education should ensure that the Teacher/Students ratio in public Junior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area in Edo state comply with the set standard of the National Policy of Education, by employing more teachers.
