ABSTRACT
The study investigated the adaptation mechanisms and challenges of parents of children with intellectual disabilities in Benin Metropolis, Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered. The descriptive research method was adopted for the study. The sample size for the study was made up of 80 respondents. Data collected from the respondents was analyzed using descriptive statistics, precisely frequency count and percentages. The findings from the study include that the primary challenges faced by parents of children with intellectual disabilities in Benin Metropolis include lack of resources, financial constraints, stigma and discrimination, lack of government support, increased stress level and mental breakdown. It was concluded that the adaptation mechanisms parents employed to manage the care of their children with intellectual disabilities in Benin Metropolis include support from family, social support networks, religious values and beliefs, counselling services and government support. The study recommended among others that government should ensure that parents have access to accurate and up-to-date information about intellectual disabilities, including available treatments, educational options, and support services.
