ABSTRACT

Traditional herbal remedies have been valued for their perceived safety and efficacy, particularly in rural communities, yet concerns persist regarding potential toxicity from prolonged use. This study focuses on evaluating the antioxidant and acutetoxity of Anthrocleista grandiflora leaves using an albino rat model. A total of twenty rats were divided into four groups, each consisting of five rats. The first group served as the control and received no treatment. In contrast, the second, third, and fourth groups were orally given the extract at doses of 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg, and 800mg/kg of their body weight, respectively. acute toxicity assessment, involving LD50 determination, indicated that doses up to 800 mg/kg did not induce acute toxicity during a 14-day observation period. Subsequent acute toxicity evaluation over 28 days revealed no adverse effects on body weight, organ weights, or signs of toxicity in treated groups. While assessing antioxidant properties concurrently, no statistically significant differences in antioxidant parameters were observed when compared to the control group. Further investigations, employing a wider dose range and alternative antioxidant assays, may be necessary to comprehensively explore the antioxidant potential of the extract. These findings contribute to understanding the safety and toxicological profile of Anthrocleista grandiflora, emphasizing the need for additional research, including chronic toxicity studies and clinical trials. Future studies can also explore optimal dosage ranges and quality control measures for potential therapeutic applications. Public awareness and responsible utilization, as well as compliance with regulatory requirements, should be integral to any future development involving Anthrocleista grandiflora.
