ABSTRACT

Plants have the major advantage of still being used as the most effective and cheaper alternative sources of drugs. Toxicity is defined as the study of adverse effects of chemical or physical agents. The seed of Garcinia kola is used in the management of headaches, stomach aches, gastritis, jaundice, high fever, and purgative. This study investigates the acute and hepatic toxicity effect of Garcinia kola seeds aqueous extract in Rats.Graded doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg of Garcinia kola seeds aqueous extract, and the control administered with the extract to evaluate the acute and liver function indexes using an established procedure. The acute toxicity results exposed no atypical physical signsand observed no mortality in graded doses of the extract. The aqueous extract of Garcinia kola seed at 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg had no significant difference in the body weight and liver function test when compared with the control (distilled water) (p<0.05). The results obtained from liver function enzymes such as; alanine transaminase (ALT) (23.68; 23.84 and 27.31 mg/dl), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (42.5, 42.5 and 48.3 mg/dl), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) (0.66, 0.63 and 0.57 mg/dl) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (14.82, 15.05 and 18.16 mg/dl) had no significant difference when compared with the control. In conclusion, no adverse effect was recorded with no mortality. This study scientifically authenticates the hepatic property of Garcinia kola seed as earlier reported from the folklore claims.
