ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the influence of educational policies on political awareness among Secondary school students in Edo State. The objectives are to assess the extent of political awareness shaped by educational policies, explore how these policies influence the development of political awareness, and identify challenges associated with policy implementation. Using a descriptive survey research design, data was collected from a sample of 228 Secondary school students randomly selected from 14 public Secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The research instrument, a questionnaire titled "Influence of Educational Policies in Shaping Political Awareness" (REPSPA), was designed and validated by the researcher. The findings indicate that educational policies significantly shape students' political awareness, impacting their understanding of political concepts and engagement with contemporary issues. However, challenges such as inadequate teacher training and curriculum constraints hinder effective policy implementation. Recommendations include the provision of ongoing professional development for teachers, curriculum review to prioritize political awareness, and a balanced approach to standardized testing to enhance civic education. Suggestions for further research include longitudinal studies and comparative analyses to deepen understanding of the relationship between educational policies and political awareness.
