ABSTRACT

The study was undertaken to assess the acceptability of vision insurance in Optometry Clinic, University of Benin, Benin City. Data were collected from 240 participants (220 patient and 20 practitioners) through the use of structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling technique was applied in the selection of participants. The objectives of the study were to examine the socio-economic characteristics of patient and practitioner, acceptability of vision insurance, identify the need for vision insurance of both patient and practitioner, and determine the awareness of health insurance policy of patient. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the socio-economic characteristics of participants alongside the needs for vision insurance of patient and practitioner, awareness of vision insurance. Likert Rating scale was used to determine the acceptability of vision insurance. Krippendorff Alpha Reliability test was used to test the hypothesis of the study. The mean age of patient was 26.8years while practitioner was 33.1years in this study. The result from the Krippendorff reliability test revealed a high reliability and significance (Alpha ≥ 0.8) of acceptability of vision insurance by patients while there was a slightly high reliability and significance (Alpha ≥ 0.6) of acceptability of vision insurance by practitioners. This shows that there is a likelihood/chance of vision insurance being accepted if implemented in Nigeria. The result from this study showed that both patients and practitioners had need for vision insurance (94.6% and 90%) while few of them had no need for vision insurance (3.6% and 10%). The result revealed that majority of the participants are aware of health insurances (86.4%) while few of them are not aware of health insurances (13.6%). It was hereby recommended that government should support the implementation of vision insurance in Nigeria through grants as its needs and benefits are important in health sector.
