ABSTRACT
The learning of students in most universities has become a top priority among educators who have vowed to make a difference locally, regionally, nationally and globally. Nursing education is designed to educate and train nursing students to become competent and qualified professional Nurses. However, several factors or challenges inevitably influence the learning of students and ultimately threaten the nursing profession. These variables are both external and internal. Internal factors are mostly student-related while external factors contribute to the external environment of students that are beyond their control. The study assessed the academic factors that affect learning among Nursing Students in the Department of Nursing, University of Benin, Edo State. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was adopted. A sample size of two hundred and twenty (220) Nursing students was used for the study from a population size of 404 Nursing students across 3 levels in the department of Nursing. A self-structured questionnaire was used to get data from the respondents which were validated by the researcher's supervisor. The questionnaires were shared using the convenience sampling technique. Two hundred and twenty questionnaires (220) were retrieved for analysis, which was a 100% response rate. The analytical method used was mean, frequency, percentage, and Chi-square analysis was used to test the hypothesis of this study. This study sheds light on the academic factors affecting learning among nursing students in University of Benin which are classified as student, home and teacher related factors which all affect learning. The study showed that teacher-related factors have the greatest impact on learning as indicated by the mean value of 4.16 while student related factors had a mean value of 3.85 and home-related factors had the lowest mean value of 3.54. The study found that there is a fair relationship between teachers, students and home related factors affecting learning among nursing students in the department of Nursing, University of Benin, Edo State. This study therefore recommends that an intervention program has to be carefully planned and implemented by school administrators and faculty. Also, assessment of students' skills should be done by the teachers. The assessment will assist teachers to give more support to the students so that they can develop effective study skills and complete their study within the allocated time frame.
