ABSTRACT
It is indeed a fact, that one of the ultimate purposes of man’s existence is procreation. For it is as a result of this that new generations are made to take over from older generations, The natural process of procreation would include a female, having engaged in sexual intercourse with an opposite sex, also having to carry her foctus in her womb until the foetus is due for delivery. However, there are instances where such a process may be terminated before the baby (foetus) is born: such instances, meaning that an abortion has taken place. Due to the effect which an abortion may have on the woman, and the society at large, there have been Laws set down to guide any act which is related to abortions, generally. This project seeks to give an overview of the scope of such laws in Nigeria as the focus, and at the same time, give a comparative analysis of the Abortion laws in some selected countries, as different from the abortion laws in Nigeria.
Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy: a miscarriage or the premature expulsion of a foetus from the womb before the normal period of gestation is complete. It is the ending of pregnancy by removing an embryo or foetus before it can survive outside the uterus. While an abortion that occurs spontaneously is also known as a miscarriage, an abortion may be caused purposely and this is called an induced abortion. However, the word ‘abortion’ is often used to mean only induced abortions.
