ABSTRACT
This report aims to investigate the practices of managing environmental waste in abattoirs within the Oredo Local Government Area of Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. In the context of Nigeria, a developing nation grappling with challenges in waste management, disposal, and treatment systems, environmental pollution has been on the rise. The waste generated by abattoirs, comprising liquid, solid, and gaseous pollutants such as animal blood, bones, rumen fluid, fats, hair trimmings, urine, and dung from carcass processing and premature fetuses, poses a significant environmental risk if not handled effectively. The study focused on two abattoirs, examining their structures, facilities, and operational practices. Data collection involved surveys, questionnaires, key informant interviews, and physical observations. Water samples from nearby streams were also collected and analyzed, with further statistical analysis conducted on the results. The findings underscored the need for proper facilities for slaughtering and waste treatment in abattoirs. Water treatment analysis, encompassing parameters like pH, temperature, conductivity, and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), highlighted the necessity for improved waste management. The report emphasizes the importance of adopting safe disposal, treatment, and processing methods, including burial, composting, rendering, incineration, anaerobic digestion, and blood processing. It concludes with a recommendation that abattoirs should be equipped with modern slaughtering and waste management facilities.
