ABSTRACT
This research delves into the design and implementation of a web-based electronic record system, with the University of Benin Health Care Centre as a specific case study. The study begins by highlighting the importance of efficient health record management in delivering high-quality healthcare services and discusses how the digital revolution has transformed the healthcare sector, emphasizing the advantages of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). The existing challenges faced by the University of Benin Health Care Centre's paper-based record-keeping system are explored, including inefficiency, limited accessibility, data redundancy, security concerns, and the absence of data analysis capabilities. The research objectives are defined, focusing on assessing current record-keeping practices, identifying system requirements, designing and developing a user-friendly web-based electronic record system, evaluating its usability, and assessing potential benefits and challenges. Research questions are formulated to guide the study. The study employs various fact-finding methods, including interviews, observation, and document analysis, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the existing system's intricacies, objectives, and challenges. The analysis of the existing system highlights its objectives, input processes, and outputs, revealing inefficiencies and limitations. The justification for transitioning to a web-based electronic record system is grounded in the system's potential to enhance efficiency, accessibility, data security, data analysis, and cost savings. The design of the new system is outlined, featuring modules for patient registration, data entry, retrieval, security, and reporting. The research underscores the need for a transformative change from the existing paper-based system to the webbased electronic record system. Recommendations are provided for system implementation, training, data migration, security, data analysis, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. The successful adoption of the new system is expected to greatly improve healthcare management and patient care at the University of Benin Health Care Centre.
