The major constituents of food are carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. They are digested and absorbed in the stomach and intestine. Some of the digested/degraded components of the food may either be reutilized or may be excreted out. Chewing of the food, movement of the stomach and intestine, facilitate the grinding of the food materials and bring them in contact with gastric secretions.

Protein is a large complex molecule that must undergo a series of processes during digestion. During digestion and absorption, protein passes through many organs. Once protein is digested, the body utilizes its nutrient to build and repair the cells in the body. The body also uses the calories from protein which are released during the digestion process for energy when carbohydrates and fats are not available.
