ABSTRACT
This research work examines the syntactic derivation of numerals in the Ẹdo language. It used the packing strategy by Hurford (1975,1987,2003,2007) to show syntactic constituents of higher numerals. The derivation processes are addition, subtraction, multiplication and mixed(addition and multiplication).
The method of data collection adopted in this work is divided into primary and secondary, information from five (5) competent speakers of Ẹdo language, and secondary data was collected from books by Eguavoen (2014) and Imasuen (2010).
This research work which shows the derivational processes by Hurford which uses a small phrase structure, in deriving numerals using the addition strategy higher numbers are packed to both right and left and left side of the phrase structure, the multiplication strategy higher numbers are packed to the left side of the phrase structure. The subtraction strategy which used numbers from 16-19 the higher number was packed to the right side of the phrase. The mixed strategy the higher number is packed in the middle of the phrase structure.
The work would serve as an avenue for documenting the numeral system of Edo language and also reference material for those researchers who are interested in the syntactic aspect of numeral system.
