ABSTRACT
Occupational hazards pose a considerable threat to the health and safety of workers in bottling companies. Workers in bottling companies are exposed to multiple ocular risks, particularly in cases where adequate protective measures are not in place. To assess the knowledge of occupational hazards and the use of eye protective devices among workers at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. A cross-sectional study was carried out in the premises of the Coca-Cola bottling company Benin city, Edo state within two months in June-July 2023. The study was carried out by using a well-structured questionnaire administered to the entire 349 workers of the Coca-Cola bottling company (267 males and 82 females). The information on the types of hazards exposed to, knowledge, attitude and practical use of eye protective devices were obtained. The result will be analyzed using the statistical package for the social science (SPSS statistics for windows, version 22.0). The result showed that the majority of the participants were males (76.5%) while a lesser number were females (23.5%). Majority of the participants were between the ages of 26-30 (18.6%). Most of them (52.1%) were single and (45%) were married. (96%) were Christians with (3.7%) being Muslims and only (0.3%) traditionalists. Also the majority of the participants (99.4%) had knowledge on the use of eye Protective devices while (0.6%) had no knowledge on the use of eye protective devices. Also the results showed that about 210 out of 349 (60.2%) had experienced occupational hazards resulting from broken bottles and bottle burst injuries while 139 out of 349 (39.8%) had experienced occupational hazards resulting from chemical burns and noise. The study concluded that despite the increased awareness of the use of eye Protective devices among workers a majority of the participants (57.9%) do not always wear eye protective devices when working while about (42.1%) do wear eye protective devices when working.
