ABSTRACT

The research work is on the Factors Mediating Against Tertiary Institution Students towards the study of Mathematics, it comprises of five chapters. Chapter discussed about the introduction, statement of the problem and research questions chapter two discuss to review of related literature, while chapter deal with the methodology of the study. To carry out the research work questionnaire was formulated, which comprise of twenty five (25) research questions. Descriptive survey design was used to gather information from the respondents. A total of 120 respondents were used as sample size which were drawn from 100 level to 400 level student from the department of mathematic, and thirty (30) students were selected from each levels for carry out the investigations. Data was analyzed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation and the reliability was tested, 0.85 result was obtained. From the findings it was discovered that Factors Mediating against Tertiary Institution Students towards the study of Mathematics are lack of instructional materials, lack of proper teaching methods, peer pressure, parental influence and teachers/ lecturers attitude. To profile solution to it, the following recommendation were suggested. Provision of Instructional materials must be made available to explain mathematic topic properly. Teachers should make use of improvised instructional materials to teach mathematics. Teachers should adopt the right teaching method which will arose students interest in mathematics. Parents should encourage their children to develop interest in mathematics and to buy necessary textbook which will make students to develop interest in mathematic. Students should be organized in group to assist themselves on lectures strategies in mathematics which will developed their interest in mathematics. Seminar, workshops, conferences, training and retraining should be organized for teachers in order to equip them with modern method of teaching and how to utilize instructional materials.
