ABSTRACT

The distribution of the dipteran fauna of living homes in Uselu in Benin city, Edo State Nigeria, were studied between September and November 2022. Samples of diptera were collected from three different homes in Uselu using traps, baits, nets and culturing. Nine groups of Diptera were found in analyzable numbers. The assemblage of  Diptera was dominated by Muscidae with a percentage composition of 56.92% with the highest species richness of 510 individuals, followed by Calliphoridae with percentage composition of 19.31% comprising 173 individuals, next in order was Culicidae having a percentage of 9.82% with 88 individuals, followed by Chironomidae with 6.31% percentage composition with 57 individuals, Sarcophagidae had 3.46%, Drosophilidae and Tachanidae had 1.46% abundance with 13 individuals each, Anthomyiidae had 1.12% abundance with 10 individuals, Tephritidae had the least abundance of  0.11% with just one representative. Factors that affected the diversity of flies were anthropogenic as the home with the least of human disturbances had more diversity. Based on Shannon-Wiener Index (H’), all study sites (Study site one, study site two and study site three) had diversity indices of 1.61, 1.94 and 1.23 respectively indicating a higher diversity in study site two. This study can be used in controlling insect pest around homes.
