ABSTRACT

Schistosomiasis is one of the world's most prevalent tropical disease and it is caused by different schistosome species. Over 20 species are found mostly in Africa and Asia countries. This disease is of medical and veterinary importance. A survey was conducted between June to October 2019 to investigate and determine the prevalence of schistosome species in the urine samples of 302 cattle. It was carried out at the government abattoir Ikpoba hill, Benin city, Edo state. Simple sedimentation process or technique was used or applied to process the urine samples and then checked under the microscope. This study revealed 14.1% prevalence of schistosomiasis species. Schistosoma specie 2 had the highest prevalence 77.1% than the other two. Schistosome species 1, 2.0%, Schistosoma specie 3,5.6%. In conclusion schistosome species are prevalent in Ikpoba hill government abattoir Benin city, Edo state and it is one of the health problems in that district. More studies should be done on Schistosome species in and around Benin City as no record of any research has been done prior to this time.
