A SURVEY OF PATIENTS' EXPERIENCE ON SUPERVISED STUDENT OPTOMETRY CONSULTATION: A CASE STUDY OF OPTOMETRY CLINIC, UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

Quality healthcare delivery is a vital aspect of patient care in the health care system, and the level of satisfaction from a patient following such services is a critical metric of how well the health care was delivered. Teaching clinics have the responsibility to train students to equip them with the necessary skills and experience so they are readily able to take on patient health care needs unsupervised when they graduate from the training institution. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient's experience and satisfaction during their examination with supervised clinical students’ consultations in University of Benin Optometry Clinic. A well-structured questionnaire waspresented to 228 patients who had underwent an examination in the clinic involving a student for a period of six weeks. Results showed that there were more females(127 (55.7%)) than males(101 (44.3%)) with a mean age of 29.5 ± 4.0 years and 81.5% and 67.9% had good experience and good satisfaction respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the association between the age of the patients and the level of satisfaction by the patient(p<0.001) and no statistically significant difference in the association between the gender of the patient, the level of education and their level of satisfaction during clinical students’ consultation (p>0.05). In conclusion, the result of the study showed a high level of good experiences and satisfaction by the patients’ who had a student involved in their examination therefore permission of the patient be sought first before the students are allowed to participate in their examination.
