ABSTRACT
A survey of pangolins in eleven markets in Benin City was undertaken between December 2016 and March 2017. Weekly visits were made to selected markets known for bush meat sales. A total of 71 heads, 47 tails, 19 whole animals and scales were recorded from the markets. New Benin market recorded the highest number of heads (42.25%) and tails (59.57%) while Ekiuwa, a popular bush meat market had the highest number of whole pangolins (73.68%) as well having both the heads and the tails, Uselu market and Ekioba also recorded pangolin scales being sold. Interviews with the traders revealed that pangolin use in traditional medicine as well as for food resulted in its high demand. Of the four markets without records of pangolin, one of them was due to traditional rules. Pangolins are important in the food web and local ecosystems, thus communities need to be aware of their benefits in order to be involved in their conservation.
