ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to investigate the outdoor play environment in Benin City. To this end, three research questions were generated to guide the study. The study adopted the cross-sectional survey research design and the population comprised all teachers in public and private primary schools housing early childhood and development classes in Benin City Edo State. The sample consisted of two hundred (200) early childhood teachers conveniently selected from 20 primary schools housing early childhood and development classes in Benin City Edo. The instrument for data collection was a self-structured playground assessment questionnaire designed after review of related literature and previous instruments. The face and content validity of the instrument was established by the expert judgment approach. In this regard, the specimen of the draft copy of the questionnaire was presented to the supervisor (a child safety expert) and two other lecturers (expert in measurement and evaluation and early childhood education). The data generated was analyzed with the use of frequency counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation.
