ABSTRACT
This work focuses on the use of foregrounding in Igbo-Ukwu Community figurative expressions which include proverbs, idioms and riddles. It also mentions some contexts in which these figurative expressions can be used. The theories of foregrounding in Literary Stylistics and relevance in Pragmatics were used in this study. The methodology for this work is qualitative. For this project, fourty-seven ( 47 ) proverbs, twenty-six ( 26 ) idioms and twenty ( 20 ) riddles were recorded as they were being spoken by an oral artist in Igbo-Ukwu. Ten ( 10 ) of each of these figurative expressions were analysed in the chapters while the rest are added in the appendix. The work establishes that Igbo-Ukwu Community speakers use figurative expressions to preserve culture, communicate, entertain one another and for didactic purposes.
Keywords: Igbo-Ukwu, proverbs, idioms, riddles, context.
