ABSTRACT

This study investigates the psychological impact of traditional African architectural elements, within modern living environments of Benin city residences, with the aim to identify unique ways in which traditional African architectural designs can foster a sense of comfort and belonging among inhabitants, such that it promotes healthy communal interactions, while also integrating the Western architectural concept or way of designing. The study delves into the intrinsic characteristics of African architecture, such as spatial organization, materiality, symbology, and communal structures, to elucidate their profound impact on psychological well-being, cultural identity, and the creation of home environments. The analysis explores how traditional African architecture, with its emphasis on organic forms, use of natural materials, and communal spaces, engenders a sense of familiarity, connectedness, and psychological comfort among inhabitants. Moreover, the research evaluates the contrasts between African architectural principles and Western design ideologies, highlighting the ways in which the former resonates more profoundly with the cultural and psychological predispositions and social identities of African individuals.
