ABSTRACT

The beverage industry's wastewater generation and management has become a significant hazard to freshwater bodies, aquatic biota, and human health. This study was carried out to analyze the impact of the beverage effluent on the physiochemical parameters of  Eruvbi stream within three weeks in the month of January 2022, and its influence on the social activities of the people was ascertained through the use of a questionnaire. The following physiochemical parameters, conductivity, turbidity, total suspended solid, chloride, calcium, alkalinity, total hardness, magnesium, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, sulfate, phosphate, nitrate, ammonium and chemical oxygen demand were analyzed using samples collected from three different station across the stream, it was then analyzed for physicochemical properties with standard laboratory techniques. The result obtained showed that turbidy , pH   and COD was high  at station 1 (effluent discharge  point ). Alkalinity, and phosphate was high at station 2 (upstream of effluent discharge point). Electrical conductivity, total suspended solids and sulfate were found within the permissible limit, chloride, calcium and dissolved oxygen was observed to be very low and they were not within the permissible limit. All of the parameters were compared with the WHO guidelines, this reveals that there is deterioration in the quality of the stream water and with the aid of the survey questions it was observed that the effluent and other activities around the stream has impacted the stream negatively.
