ABSTRACT
The study investigated factors influencing truancy among secondary school students in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. The design adopted for this study was the descriptive survey method. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide this study: What acts of truancy exists among secondary school students in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State? What are the causes of truancy in secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State? What are the effects of truancy on the behavior and academic performance of students in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State? What are the roles the teacher, parents, school authorities and government play towards the reduction of truancy in schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State?
The population of the study consisted of the total number of public secondary school students in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size for this study was a total number of one hundred (100) students who were selected using the simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from respondents tagged, “Students’ Questionnaire on A Study on the Influence of Truancy among Secondary School Students ”. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed using a statistical software package (SPSS). After analysis, results were displayed on tables showing frequencies and percentages of responses from participants in the study.
Findings from the study revealed that truancy exist among public junior secondary school students. It was also found that truancy is caused by negative peer influence, lack of parental support, among others. It was therefore recommended that school counselling center have a role to play in guiding students who perpetuate acts of truancy. Also, parents should intensify their efforts in training their children and ensure they are fully built morally and behaviourally.
