ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of instructional materials on the learning of Biology in Senior Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The research was based on three objectives including: to determine the availability of instructional materials in senior secondary schools, the extent teachers use these instructional materials and the extent students show interest while learning with instructional materials.
The population of the study was all SS2 Senior Secondary School Students,a sample of 150 students was selected using the simple random sampling technique and the instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Data was analysed using mean and percentage. The following were the findings of the study: Firstly, the instructional materials are not enough to guide and direct learning experience, secondly, the extent of usage of these instructional materials was very poor and thirdly, the extent of student's interest in Biology lessons while using instructional materials was very high.
The following recommendation were made: The government should strive and set aside a reasonable amount of education budget which will be directed to improve and construct laboratories in schools. Government should organize workshops, seminars and conferences for teachers to enable them up-date their knowledge on new developments on the use of instructional materials. Teachers should try hands on the production of simple aids so that students can see what they are talking about in the lessons.
