A STUDY OF THE PROBLEM OF TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF JUNIOR SECONDAY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA)

ABSTRACT

The study assessed the problems of teaching social studies in junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State, Nigeria. A descriptive research design which involves collection of data through the use of questionnaire was adopted to solicit information. The population of the study is made up of social studies teachers in Public and Private Junior Secondary School in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample of the study comprised of sixty (60) teachers. Three research questions were used to guide the study; the research question was answered using frequency count and percentages to analyze the data collected and the reliability stood at 0.75.

The findings revealed that peering students in discussion group for them to brainstorm and build interpersonal relationship is one of the best ways of teaching social studies. It revealed that lack of timing, adequate recent social studies textbooks, lack of continuity in teaching social studies from junior to secondary school, interest towards funding of education by the government, and shortage of trained social studies teachers are some of the problems associated with the teaching of social studies. It further revealed that appropriate teaching methods, adequate timing, writing of recent books by social studies scholars, setting good examples as a social studies teacher for students to follow and the subject been taught by a social studies specialist not just by any teacher of other profession are some of the solutions to the problem associated with the teaching of social studies. are some of the problems associated with the teaching of social studies in junior secondary school. It was recommended that government should ensure that teaching aids as well as qualified teachers are sent to all junior secondary schools and the teachers should try to lay more emphasis on the use of effective motivating methods of teaching social studies. Also, government should ensure that social studies seminars and workshops are organized for social studies teachers through the Ministry of Education in order to keep them abreast with the regular social changes in the society.
