ABSTRACT

The investigation on the influence of instructional materials on achievement and retention of biology concept among secondary school students in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State, Four (4) research questions served as it's guidelines, and it used a descriptive survey study design. It sought to find out How many schools have adequate Instructional materials in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State? What is the influence of the use of instructional materials on the academic performance of Biology Students in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State? What is the level of retention of Biology Concept among Biology Students in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State? What is the effect of the use of instructional materials on retention ability of male and female Biology students in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State? The study employed a sample of Biology students in Ovia North Local Government Area of EDO State and a total of (200) respondents which were collected from two public schools and two private schools. The researcher developed questionnaire titled Questionnaire on "influence of instructional materials on achievement and retention of biology concept among secondary school students" was used as the data collection tool. There are fourteen (14) items on the questionnaire. To analyze the data collected, descriptive statistics such as mean, Simple percentage and frequency were used. The study find out that When instructional materials are used in the classroom, secondary school students are interested in learning, When teacher-student relationships are improved, student academic achievement is increased. It was suggested that Governmental and nongovernmental organizations, as well as the general public, should make an effort to give secondary schools enough Instructional Materials, To get the best results in biology teaching and learning in secondary schools, instructional materials should be used. This will increase the amount of participation from students both during and after biology classes, Secondary school sciences should receive appropriate funding to enable local procurement of the necessary instructional materials.
