ABSTRACT
A field experiment was carried out on the effect of the mixture of compost and poultry manure on the growth of Vigna unguiculata for a period of 5 weeks. The experiment consisted of one control and four different treatments with the percentage mixture of compost and poultry manure being 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% (A, B, C, D and E) respectively. Each treatment had 3 replicates making it a total of 15 bags. Five (5) seeds were planted in each bag and germination reading was taken for 7 days after which reading for plant height, number of leaves, number of branches and girth were taken weekly for 4 weeks. At the end of germination study, A, B, C, D and E recorded 86.67%, 86.67%, 60.00%, 86.67% and 46.67% respectively. At the end of the experiment, 5 weeks after planting, the results revealed significant enhancement in the growth parameters when compared to control. Data recorded for plant height were 12.57±0.72, 21.00±0.29, 24.33±1.20, 27.67±2.19, 18.60±3.24 for control, 3%, 6%, 9% 12% respectively. The number of leaves obtained at the experiment for the control, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% treatments were 5.33±0.33, 25.00±1.15, 23.33±1.33, 23.00±3.06, 11.67±4.63. However, this study was inclusive as the yield of Vigna unguiculata was not observed.
