ABSTRACT
An experiment was carried out to examine the effect of light intensity on the growth of Corchorus olitorius L. The experiment was carried out for a period of 6 weeks. Corchorus olitorius was grown under different light Intensities, low (16000lux), medium (25000lux) and high (50000lux). Each treatment was replicated thrice. Growth parameters such as plant height, leaf number, chlorophyll content index (CCI), wet and dry weight as well as leaf area were determined in the course of the experiment. Exposure of the plant to different light levels resulted in significant differences in growth parameters. The mean value recorded for plant height at the highest light level was significantly different from that of the lowest light level. Similar results were obtained for other growth attributes such as leaf area, dry weight and leaf number. It is concluded that the best growth for the plant was obtained under full solar radiation. This information can be used by growers and researchers to design more productive cultivation technique that guarantee optimal light exposure and hence promote Corchorus olitorius growth and productivity.
