ABSTRACT

The Study investigated the attitudes of secondary School Students toward the study of history in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The population of the study comprised of all the Eleven thousand and Thirty Seven (11,037) Students in the Fifteen (15) public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample of the study was made up of One hundred and Ten (110) students drawn from Four (04) randomly selected secondary schools in the local government. The instrument used in generating data for the study was a structured questionnaire personally designed by the researcher herself. The questionnaire which was validated with reliability co-efficient 0.56 was administered to the resondents by the researcher herself and the data generated from it's administration was analyzed with the use of tables and percentages. From the analysis, it was discovered that the general attitudes of secondary students towards history in Oredo Local Government was positive as majority of the students believed that history is relevant to everyday life, even though it was regarded as a boring subject. Secondly, students in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area believed that there are factors that influences students attitude towards learning history. Thirdly, majority of the students believed that teacher's teaching method influences students' attitudes to history. On the basis of these findings recommendations were made.
