ABSTRACT
This study explored the perspectives of junior secondaryschool students in Ovia North East Local Government Area, EdoState, Nigeria on stimulating citizenship education through social studieseducation. A thematic analysis of open-ended responsesfromaquestionnaire revealed three main themes: The importanceof social studies education for citizenship education. Students emphasizedtheimportance of social studies education for citizenship education, asithelps them to understand their rights and responsibilities ascitizens, to develop critical thinking skills, and to become informedandengaged citizens. The need for stimulating and engaging social studies education. Students also emphasized the need for stimulating andengagingsocial studies education. They stated that social studies education is moreeffectivewhen it is relevant to their lives and when it allows themtoparticipateactively in learning. Suggestions for improving social studieseducation. Students provided suggestions for improvingsocial studies education. These suggestions included making social studieseducation more relevant to their lives, using more activelearningstrategies, and providing more opportunities for studentstoparticipate in civic engagement activities.
