ABSTRACT
With emphasis on the social and cultural aspects, this study aims to examine the utilization of rammed earth construction methods and their possible applications for housing delivery in Benin City. Rammed earth construction is an old building techniques that utilizes the use of local materials like sand, gravel, clay and stabilizers to create strong, long lasting and sustainable structures. This study begins with an analysis of the historical and cultural significance of rammed earth construction in Benin City. It shedslight on the social context and traditional knowledge associated with this building techniques by considering its importance to the identity and cultural legacy of the local community. This study evaluates the technical elements of rammed earth construction such as its material characteristics, structural design and construction techniques. The study intends to ascertain Rammed earth potential for meeting the population of Benin City’s housing needs by examining its viability and adaptability in local settings. The study also examines the social and cultural implications of incorporating rammed earth construction techniques into procedures for housing deliveries in Benin City. This includes engaging with members of the community, Architects, Builders etc. to understand their opinions, preferences and concerns about the use of an alternative technique in construction. This research also looks at the Economic gains and Environmental effects of rammed earth buildings in Benin City. Finally, by investigating the potential of rammed earth construction techniques, this study attempts to add to the conversation of sustainable housing solutions in Benin City. This study aims to 5 provide insights and suggestions for incorporating rammed earth into the city’s housing delivery strategies by taking into accounts the social and cultural aspects together with the technical and practical considerations, with the objective of promoting sustainable development while honoring regional customs and values.
