SUMMARY

This study explored the style and language used in Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo's Children of the eagle and the last of the strong ones by revealing the linguistic and para linguistic found in the novel and how the author manipulated English to accommodate her thought patterns and experiences. From this study, it is glaring that Adimora-Ezeigbo's style of writing is unique to the context it is being used in. As her style of writing stays distinctive from other writers from the type of narrative she uses in both novels to her use of punctuation and rhythm to the use of the series of question technique. Style can be applied to understanding of the novel since style and language works interchangeably. Adimora-Ezeigbo's language use in both children of the eagle and the last of the strong ones is greatly dominated by her use of Igbo appositives (local words) to bend the English language which the novel is written in to achieve her desired local colour. Adimora-Ezeigbo like other Nigerian novelist used the process of igbonization or igboism to stretch the resources of the English language. Since many novels written in English by the Igbo people of Nigeria reveals a lot about the Igbo culture and values. And these novelists have drawn a lot from the characters, syntax, semantics, phonology and so on from the Igbo language even while they write in English. This study uses the Hallidian systemic functional grammar which emphasis on how language is used. The ideational method that uses language to organize and express our experience. This is how the writer presents her experience of reality which is the marker of style. Thus stressing the concept of style as a choice. Hence the reason why the 35 speeches of the characters are laced with local appositives, local proverbs, transliteration, high profile Igbo songs and tales, lexical transfers and so on. Another major focus is on the use of the formalist theory. As formalism views literature as the specialised use of language and proposes a fundamental opposition between the literary use of language. Formalist have also made influential contributions to the theory of prose fiction. This genre, the central formalist distinction is that between the story and a plot and an author is said to transform the raw material of the story into a literary plot by the use of a variety of devices that violate sequence.
