ABSTRACT
The EndSARS protest started as a call for the disbandment of Nigeria’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigerian Police Force that has earned notoriety for its brutality and human rights violations such as Harassment, kidnapping, extortion, extrajudicial killings of young men and woman which we’re profiled by SARS simply because of expensive Lifestyle (Clothing, Gadgets ,Cars, Phones.etc). In some cases individuals don’t have to look expensive in order for them to be harassed by SARS you just have to be a youth in Nigeria. The slogan #ENDSARS was first used in 2018 to raise awareness of allegations of violence and exploitation by SARS officials.1 The government announced structural changes to SARS but the alleged human rights violations and exploitation continued. There were reports on social media in October 2020 of the unprovoked shooting of a boy in Ughelli Delta State by SARS operatives.2 Even though the Nigerian Police denied the shooting in this particular case, video footage of police shootings spread across social media platforms in order to quell public anger.
