ABSTRACT

This study examines clipping in Yoruba personal names. The study seeks to investigate the types of clipping in Yoruba personal names, classification of clipping in Yoruba personal names and the analysis of clipping that shows meaning alteration in Yoruba personal names. It's significance would help create awareness to students and youths on the adverse effect of clipping in Yoruba names, they are no longer proud to bear their names because they prefer names for identification and other purposes. Its problem is the distortion of names and most often, misinterpretation or complete loss of the original and full meanings of the names. The theoretical framework employed in this work is the Basic Linguistic theory. This research was carried out by using the primary source of data collection through one to one interview with the informants. At the end of the research work, the findings shows that clipping really do exist in Yoruba personal names. The research concludes that in the process of clipping in a language especially when it comes to names, the semantic properties are of great importance. Yoruba names play a pragmatic role in the structure of Yoruba language rather than the usual banal usage as tags for identifying an individual
