ABSTRACT
Research has shown that the wastes generated in ships are the main sources of marine pollution. Knowing that the water body is a very vast and significant player in the ecosystem and it covers over 70% of the earth’s surface and that the water body is very essential for the survival of every organism and specie inhabiting the earth, it is very important to always make sure the water bodies are properly taken care of at all times and season. Solid waste is currently the most abundant type of litter in the ocean, predominantly plastics waste making up 80% of all marine debris found from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. The methods that were applied for this project can be generally categorized into; Literature review, Data collection and analysis which involved visits to various shipyards for survey and distribution of questionnaires, and Design for effective solid waste management in ships. We were able to review the existing systems of managing solid wastes and identify their various limitations. This research prompted us to want to provide a lasting solution to solid waste managements in ships. After Various research, we were able to design a system for sustainable solid waste management in ships. Here, solid wastes will be collected from various ships through a transfer system and then recycled into useful substances. This system aims at reducing solid waste pollution in sea, generating revenue for shipping companies and also reduce the cost of operations for these shipping companies.
