ABSTRACT
This research work is concerned with the structural analysis of Igbo ideophones in Amoji Imenyi Community, looking at the lexical aspect of these ideophones in Amoji Imenyi with the aim of identifying and analyzing them. It also identified the forms, the functions; examine the meaning and characteristics of ideophones in the Igbo spoken in Amoji Imenyi. The concern of this study is to identify and give the meaning of the ideophones in Amoji Imenyi. Data for this study were gathered from several discourses in which Igbo language is used by its speakers. This data was written during interview with competent speakers. Some published and unpublished works in Igbo language were consulted. The framework employed in this work is a theory of lexical semantics; this theory is able to account for the meaning of individual word. It was observed that Igbo ideophones describe sound, size and shape, motion and the state of something or someone. The findings of the study give a clear understanding of the structural analysis of Igbo ideophones in Amoji Imenyi community. During the course of the study, it was found that ideophones have different characteristics and functions. The findings show that ideophones have different categories and forms. Equally, it was realized that ideophones are categorized based on their structure and functions.
The study concludes, among others, that some ideophones in Igbo language have more than one meaning of the same form. The context of usage of ideophones determines their meaning(s).
